Reading puff counts honestly

A puff count is a capacity estimate, not a guarantee, and it is worth understanding how the number is produced before you use it to compare products. Manufacturers measure on a puffing machine that takes a draw of a fixed duration at a fixed interval — typically around two seconds, once every thirty seconds. Divide the usable liquid volume by the liquid consumed per machine puff and you get the figure printed on the box. What changes your real-world total

• Draw length. A four-second pull consumes roughly twice the liquid of a two-second pull. This is the single biggest variable, and it is entirely under your control.

Getting the most from a pod

First fit

Seat a new pod firmly and leave it a couple of minutes before the first draw. The wick needs to saturate, and a dry first pull is the most common cause of a burnt taste on an otherwise perfect pod. Then take two or three short, gentle priming puffs before settling into your normal draw.

During use

Chain-puffing outruns the wick. If the flavour thins mid-session, stop for thirty seconds and it will usually recover. If the device has adjustable airflow, opening it up slightly reduces the demand on the coil. Keep the device upright when it is not in use, and keep it out of direct sunlight and away from a car dashboard in summer — heat degrades flavour compounds and thins the liquid.

Storage

No vapour, device unresponsive

If the screen or light shows nothing at all after twenty minutes on charge, try a different cable and a different plug before concluding the device is dead. Draw-activated devices have a small pressure sensor in the airway; if a pod has been over-tightened or the contacts are wet, a wipe with a dry tissue often restores it.

Weak flavour or a thin draw

Check the pod level first — a nearly empty reserve gives exactly this symptom. If the pod is fresh, you are probably drawing too fast for the wick. Slow down, lengthen the gap between puffs, and give it a minute. Cold liquid is thicker, so a pod that has been in a coat pocket outdoors will need a few minutes at room temperature.

Burnt taste

Gurgling or liquid in the mouthpiece

Leaking around the base

Recycling and disposal

Used pods and end-of-life devices are electrical waste and must not go in general household rubbish. Pods contain a coil and residual liquid; devices contain a lithium battery that can ignite when crushed in a bin lorry or at a sorting facility. This is a real and well-documented fire risk in UK waste infrastructure, not a formality.

• Take used pods and devices to a vape shop or retailer offering a take-back point, or to your local household waste recycling centre's WEEE and battery collection.
• Do not put vape products in kerbside recycling bins unless your local authority explicitly says it accepts them.
• Do not attempt to open a pod or prise a battery out of a device body.
• Keep used pods away from children and pets — residual liquid contains nicotine.

Under UK WEEE rules, retailers that sell electrical goods have take-back obligations, so ask at the counter of any physical vape shop near you.
